Class mare Sheidel will be given a Group 1 campaign back home in Perth after winning a pair of Group 3 sprints in Melbourne last month.
Trained at Lindsay Park for owners Rob & Sylvie Crabtree, she will fly west for the $1 million Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Ascot on November 26.
“Sheidel has done everything bar win a Group 1,” trainer David Hayes said. “She’s a filly that wins more than she loses. She’s just a little fighter and, when she loses, she’s often been genuinely unlucky.”
Crabtree bought her from WA owner-breeder Des De Largie earlier this year and she’s gone to another level with wins in the G3 Northwood Plume Stakes at Caulfield and G3 Begonia Belle Stakes at Flemington. She was also runner-up in the G1 Robert Sangster Stakes in Adelaide.
Sheidel (Holy Roman Emperor) had signed off in Perth with a Listed hat-trick at the 2015 Ascot summer carnival before Belmont Bloodstock (FBAA) agent Damon Gabbedy called Crabtree earlier this year.
“I was obviously aware of Sheidel but Damon really knows the West Australian scene and it was too good an opportunity to pass up,” Crabtree said. “I’m certainly in no rush to send her off to stud. They tell you when they’re ready and I just enjoy racing them: especially when they are going as well as Sheidel.”
A Group 1 would lift Sheidel’s horizons as a broodmare at Crabtree’s Dorrington Park Stud in Victoria. There’s residual value already through her dam Laventour (Metal Storm) who is a half-sister to LR Summer Scorcher winner Latoria (Oratorio).
