Sheamus Mills Bloodstock (FBAA) has signed for 12 fillies and mares on behalf of Yulong Investments at the Tattersalls July Sale.
Melbourne-based Mills spent a total of 840,000gns (AUD 1.51 million) for Yulong principal Zhang Yuesheng. The Chinese businessman is developing YuLong Farm on 175 acres at Bayles, 75km south-east of Melbourne, and its goal is to provide a whole range of bloodstock services.
The July Sale graduates will be shipped back to YuLong Farm after being covered to southern hemisphere time by the likes of Invincible Spirit and Frankel later this year.
"We wanted access to these stallions in the northern hemisphere," Mills said. "The Tattersalls catalogue looked pretty handsome with just the blood we wanted at the time we wanted it. Then Brexit helped out with more for our dollar.
"The mares were bought to access bloodlines we can't get much of in Australia. There aren't many well-bred daughters of Shamardal and Dubawi going around back home.”
Topping the shopping was Lake Hamana (Shamardal) who cost 210,000gns from Godolphin. She’s from Listed winner Lake Toya (Darshaan) and it’s the extended family of classic winners Generous (Caerleon) and Imagine (Sadler’s Wells).
"Invincible Spirit was the driving force behind the whole thing as Mr Zhang is a massive fan of his son I Am Invincible,” Mills added. “He bought nine yearlings by him this year and he's probably his favourite stallion.
“Mr Zhang (pictured) is the first person in the sales complex in the morning and will watch almost every lot go through the ring. He's looking to have 30 or 40 quality mares in Australia. He plans on taking drafts of foals and yearlings to the sales in future years, and he wants to stand a stallion, too.”
